Thanks to the accessories, the camera can be used universally. There are lenses with 30, 45, 65, 80, 150, 250 and 300mm focal length.All optics have very high initial opening which make it very easy to sheep and allow a nice play with the depth of field. Magazines are available for the 6x6 format (12 pictures), 4,5x6cm (16 pictures) and Polaroid backs. The Kiev 88, derived from the Salyut medium format system cameras of the late 1950s, was a technical development of the Kiev 80 model, which was built from 1975 to 1980.

As a nearly identical Soviet copy of the Hasselblad 1600F, this mid-format SLR is sometimes jokingly referred to as Hasselbladski. It also has a screw bayonet for the interchangeable lenses, similar to the original Hasselblad, but not compatible with each other. The film magazines of the Kiev and those of Hasselblad are also incompatible, the viewfinder with those of the Hasselblad 1600F and 1000F, as well as with the current Hasselblad V-system models, on the other hand.

Since Kyiv-88 and 88CM cameras are inexpensive, they have become popular alternatives for medium format photographers and enthusiasts.
